Harvest Time
"If I were looking for God, every event and every moment would sow, in my will, grains of God's life, that would spring up one day in a tremendous harvest."
Thomas Merton
In the Northern Hemisphere, October is harvest time. Time to harvest what was planted in the spring and then nurtured in the summer. It is also a time of remembrance as the end of the month ushers in All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, and The Day of the Dead.
Cultures worldwide celebrate these days at the end of October and the beginning of November as a time of remembrance of those who have passed before us. The Celtics, for instance, believe this time of year is when the veil between this world and the next becomes very thin. It seems to me that it is also an opportunity to harvest remembrance.
We have all had saints in our lives, those who have planted some seed within us. Those who have gifted us with glimpses of the Kingdom, who have shared with us the love of God. Those who have given us vital lessons and wisdom, or inspiration and courage. Those who have really seen us and thus allowed us to really see ourselves. Saints come in all shapes and sizes. They may be friends, family, co-workers, teachers, or students. They may be in our life for a long time or for merely minutes. They may have planted one seed or a whole field within us. But each one is a saint worth remembering and their fruit worth harvesting.
What seeds have been given to you? How do you nourish them? What has been the harvest? Are there seeds that need tending?
May we receive the harvest and bounty of the saints who plant seeds of God’s love and kingdom in the most unexpected places, including in us, and may we remember that seeds don’t sprout overnight, don’t come to maturity in a short time, and often need our tending to come to fruition.
