Lent and The Divine Economy
The word economy in English is derived from the Medieval Latin's oeconomia. The word's first part oikos means "house", and the second part nemein means "to manage or distribute."
In a few days, we embark on the Lenten journey that takes us to Holy Week. Many Christians fast or take up new practices during this time of reflection. Often, we give up vices or food. Which can be a powerful practice, but what if we took up Malcolm Guites advice and fasted from the “pressure, external and internal, to do everything, be good at everything, be accountable to everyone for everything”.
In this time and culture, that feels like removing the weight of a mountain off our shoulders. There are so many demands on our attention and energy. We can feel like we are never free with cell phones in our pockets and the media constantly pulling on our emotions through the mechanism of fear. There is so much to do and we are so full of messages we can’t receive the ones that really matter.
Howard Thurman said, “Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” In the body of Christ, and what Guite calls the divine economy, there is more than enough of us to go around. In fact, scarcity does not exist in the divine economy. We each have a goodness to impart and a grace to share. If we can let go of all the pressures that weigh upon us, we can tune into what is ours to do and who we are in this abundant divine economy.
Who we truly are is enough.
“Most of us are under pressure, external and internal, to do everything, be good at everything, be accountable to everyone for everything! It is not so. In the divine economy each of us has a particular grace, gift and devotion. Finding out what that is, and learning how to be guilt-free about not doing everything else, may be part of what our Lenten journey is for.”
Malcolm Guite

The Contemplative Cathedral A Space to Deepen Your Spiritual Life
Join us online for contemplation and community. So many of us on the contemplative path eventually get to the point where we can go no further alone. The Contemplative Cathedral is a response to the inner yearning of many contemplatives for community. It looks a little like other social media platforms, but it is so much more. It's a space to conspire, connect, and contemplate, and our online home for all of our event info (both online & in-person), links, and groups. It also serves as a way to stay connected in between events.
