Remembrance
In this month of remembrance, I remember Dr. Barbara Holmes and her wisdom on ancestors and thin places. Her contributions to the modern contemplative movement continue to be a treasure for my spiritual life and practice. Dr. Holmes was such a gift to the contemplative community, expanding our ideas around what contemplation is and inviting us to connect with the communion of saints. As Dr Holmes said, “We live in a world saturated with the love and intentionality of an ever-present God, and we are not alone.” We are not alone; there is the presence of the Divine and the communion of saints that surround us. There is a reserve and a reservoir we can tap into, lean into. The end of October is celebrated as a time when the veil is very thin between us and the love, divine presence, and cloud of witnesses that accompany us. Numerous cultures around the world celebrate this time of year as a thin place. In the Christian church, we remember both saints of the Church and the saints of our lives. In this remembrance, we are often brought into thin places.
Beauty, too, may bring us into the thin places. Dr. Holmes describes these places, “I find myself in thin places, geo-spiritual places where I experience God unfiltered. In these spaces where great beauty runs rampant, I contemplate the artistry of the divine one who beckons me.” Fall often brings on the most colorful and beautiful time of the year. Trees and bushes ablaze with color and light often take me to a thin place. These next few weeks bring plenty of invitations to remembrance and thin places, whether it's through beauty, remembrance, or community celebrations.
May we each find those holy minutes or hours to bask in remembrance, to sense the infused holiness of the autumn tree, and sense it all as God soaked and sacred.
On Sunday, October 31st, at Pioneers Park Nature Center, we will celebrate this sacred season through remembrance, contemplation, and prairie. Learn more below.
Blessings, Adam

All Saints, All Souls, A Liturgy of Contemplation, Connection, and Remembrance.
Connect to the fall season and prairie while remembering the ordinary and extraordinary saints in our lives.
Join us for All Hallows Eve, All Saints, and All Souls Day: A yearly tradition of contemplation and remembrance through a liturgy inspired by Celtic Christian Tradition from Iona Abbey.
Where: Pioneers Park Nature Center Auditorium 3201 South Coddington - Lincoln, NE & Online
We will end our time together in contemplative silent prayer. In-person guests are welcome to walk the trails of Pioneers Park after our meeting. Both in-person and online guests will leave with suggested practices/activities for time in nature following the event.
In the Celtic Christian Tradition Halloween, also known as All Hallows Eve, celebrates summer’s end, the transition to shorter days, and the harvest. It is also a time of honoring and remembering our ancestors and saints who came before us. A time in the Celtic tradition when the veil between this world and the spirit world is very thin. Join us for this liturgy and meditation, celebrating and honoring this transition.
This Sunday follows All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day, observed in churches and communities across the world.
Join us as we intentionally invoke the themes of this rich week.
