The 4th Wave Continued

In our last newsletter, I wrote about a 4 wave model of the modern contemplative movement. You can read that here:

On October 25th, 2018, “contemplative giant” to quote Father Rohr, Thomas Keating, passed away, marking a clear transition in the modern Christian contemplative movement. Since his passing, Contemplative Outreach, the torch bearer of the Centering Prayer movement, has gone through multiple massive transitions.

The monastery at Snowmass, where Keating lived and became a central physical hub for centering prayer, has been sold to parties unknown. Last month, Father Richard Rohr released his self-proclaimed last book and has stepped away from most public teaching. Cynthia Bourgeault is slowly releasing her responsibilities and turning over the reins of her organization to the next generation.

In years prior, the movement had already lost visionaries such as John Main, Beatrice Bruteau, and Wayne Teasdale. Yet, the modern contemplative movement remains vibrant and is diversifying in new and sometimes surprising ways. These contemplative giants have facilitated the emergence of countless contemplatives and resources. They have left a legacy that the movement can build upon.

So, what is next in the ecology of the contemporary movement? Do we need to find the next Cynthia, Richard, or Thomas? For me and some others in the tradition, the next step lies not in the next person but in persons. In particular, in community. No longer gathered around a central figure, the contemplative movement can be dispersed, taking root in new forms and new places, showing up in social movements, gatherings, existing institutions, the kitchen table, and in contemplative communities like ours.

No longer tied to a centralized source, contemplation can pervade all of life and grow in new and interesting ways. Many voices can represent and prosper the movement. I am excited to see what the future will hold for the contemplative tradition, and the future needs the contemplative tradition more than ever. There is great potential for contemplative prayer, practice, and living to speak into the disordered times we now live in.

May the 4th wave meet us on the horizon of this great adventure.

The Contemplative Cathedral
A Space to Deepen Your Spiritual Life

Join us online for contemplation and community. So many of us on the contemplative path eventually get to the point where we can go no further alone. The Contemplative Cathedral is a response to the inner yearning of many contemplatives for community. It looks a little like other social media platforms, but it is so much more. It's a space to conspire, connect, and contemplate, and our online home for all of our event info (both online & in-person), links, and groups. It also serves as a way to stay connected in between events.
